When did you start at Fortius?
August 2012

Sports / Fitness background?
Been consistently running for the last 4 years and have done my own strength workouts at the gym.

Why the jump into CrossFit?
I was extremely hesitant about getting into CrossFit, not because I didn’t believe it would be a good workout, but I just felt that there were other ways to get a great workout without getting sucked into the CrossFit brand. Ultimately, though, I decided to check it out because I wanted to connect with more like minded fitness people, wanted to bring up the intensity of my workouts (it’s hard to do that by myself at 24 hour fitness), wanted to learn to lift heavier, and wanted an effective 1 hour workout since work was getting busy for me and I didn’t want my fitness lifestyle to suffer.

Why did you choose Fortius?
First, because it was the closest gym to my house and because it had great reviews. I then did further research and was sold on the fact that Jesse and Dave were very qualified Olympic Weightlifting coaches.

What kind of progress have you made over the past year?
Just doing my first cleans, jerks, and snatches were progress. Making progress on the numbers for those lifts, as well as increasing mobility since there are so many CrossFit movements. Also getting some movements I never thought I’d be able to do like pistols and kipping pull ups.

Biggest misconception about CrossFit?
The biggest misconception about CrossFit is that it is always dangerous. However, with proper trainers it is very effective and safe. Favorite and

Favorite and least favorite CrossFit movements?
Favorite at the moment is cleans because I feel it is the movement I have improved the most. Least favorite is probably toes to bar… until I get good at them and then it’ll probably become my favorite

Advice for someone looking to start CrossFit?
Find a good gym with reputable trainers. And if one gym doesn’t work out but there is still interest, try another gym. Each gym has its own “personality” and coaching style and there is likely one that fits.

What’s next? What are your goals for the future?
More CrossFit! Hopefully a competition or two to keep my motivation high to have something to aim for.  Work more on the movements that give me trouble and to keep getting stronger!
