When did you start at Fortius?
September 2012

Sports / Fitness background?
I grew up playing tennis and had been consistently doing strength training and cardio on my own for 2 years before starting CrossFit.

Why the jump into CrossFit?
I was bored with my workouts and wasn’t seeing the progress I wanted, so I felt like I needed a change. I had heard a lot of great things about CrossFit and done some research on my own, so I figured I would give it a try.

Why did you choose Fortius?
Everyone was so friendly and welcoming from the very first day I went in. I loved how encouraging and supportive everyone was and I knew I would be in good hands with how much experience Jesse and Dave have.

What kind of progress have you made over the past year?
I would say the biggest thing is that I’ve become a lot more confident in myself and my abilities, both inside and outside of the gym. I realized that I can do a lot more than I thought I could, and am now less afraid to try new movements or go for a PR. Also, a lot of the Olympic weightlifting movements, such as the clean and jerk, or the snatch, have become a lot more natural to me and I actually really enjoy them now.

Biggest misconception about CrossFit?
That it is dangerous and that you will definitely get hurt. To people who believe that, I say “CrossFit is not dangerous, bad coaching is dangerous, poor movement is dangerous, ego is dangerous.” Find the right gym and you will be fine.

Favorite and Least Favorite CrossFit movements?
Favorite right now would be snatches because they finally feel natural to me and I feel like I have improved a lot on them from when I first started. Otherwise, I love deadlifts and back squats! Least favorites would be double unders and box jumps.

Advice for someone looking to start CrossFit?
Try out a couple different gyms to make sure you find the right one. Also, don’t be afraid of the intensity of the workouts, everything can be scaled so that it is hard for you, but not impossible. Do what you can now, and soon enough you will be able to do more!

What’s next? What are your goals for the future?
Moving up to the Bay Area for work and continuing to do CrossFit! Kipping pullup, bodyweight back squat, improve on double unders and box jumps, and just to get more healthy, strong, and fit in general!
