When did you start at Fortius?
Sports / Fitness background?
I grew up playing tennis, first at a junior national level then at college. didn’t start hitting the gym for strictly working out until college.
Why did you choose Fortius?
It was the highest rated gym around where I would be moving, but honestly that’s what got me in the door. I stayed because of the people I met!
What kind of progress have you made over the past year?
Numbers aside (because I had no oly experience prior), the biggest progress I’ve experienced is being confident in what I can do. Whether it’s stepping up for a heavy clean or going up a HSW ramp, I’ve learned to trust myself and either get it done or learn how to do it.
What the biggest misconception about CrossFit?
That it’s easier than it looks, or that certain movements are cheating. I’ll admit that I was in that boat, and I see why people might have said that back when CF started gaining popularity with regards to form and technique. But like every sport, there are nuances that are misunderstood until you see why it’s being done. Efficacy is the name of the game and if you’re executing the right movement patterns, you’re at no additional risk.
Advice for someone looking to start CrossFit?
Go full send on your first workout, find out you’re not that fit, and that you want to keep doing it. That’s what happened to me! It’s always easy to find a challenge, because it never gets easier, you just get fitter.
What’s Next? What are your goals for the future?
I’m heading to Ft Benning in January to be commissioned as an engineering officer in the US Army, but I’m hoping to come back with a better engine and jump right back into competing!
