Age/Occupation?
Katie, 34, Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department

When did you start at Fortius?
I joined Fortius back in May 2014

Sports / Fitness background?
I started playing softball at age 4, which continued to be my favorite passion throughout the first few decades of my life. Competed in All-stars, travel tournaments, four years as a Varsity starter in high school. I was mildly scouted by college coaches -which got me invited to D1 team camp and try-outs…and barely missed walking on at Purdue, by one cut.
Played basketball through middle school and high school. Was captain of my volleyball team in high school as well, and went on the play club volleyball at Purdue, which allowed me to still compete on an intercollegiate level.
Since college, I’ve done several 5-10k runs and 2 sprint triathlons…. and then discovered crossfit in 2011!

Why did you choose Fortius?
I left my home state of Indiana in 2011 to start travel nursing. I dabbled in trying Crossfit in a few cities, but never fell in love with a gym like I have at Fortius. Being new to the sport of throwing barbells around, it was very important to me to find a place where I knew I’d be coached well from the get go and would be taught proper technique… and I wanted a place that was fun and friendly. I found BOTH, and haven’t been able to leave since

What kind of progress have you made over the past year?
My strength in ALL lifts have increased. Since being at Fortius, I’ve competed in 2 team competitions, but I finally was convinced to do my first individual one just recently at our in-house comp. With team sports being my forte, that was definitely out of my comfort zone… so that’s progress, right??

What the biggest misconception about CrossFit?
That it’s scary, you’ll definitely get hurt, and that it gets easier the longer you do it (It doesn’t, haha)

Advice for someone looking to start CrossFit?
Just start!! No matter what level you’re at, you’re guaranteed a good workout and new friends to suffer with… I mean hang out with.

What’s next? What are your goals for the future?
I plan to continue the journey of improving my health and fitness, and hopefully get stronger and leaner along the way. At least be fit enough still beat everyone down the mountain this upcoming ski season!
