"I thought I didn't belong because I wasn't at a certain level. But everything at Fortius is tailored to every level and everyone's needs."

When did you start Fortius?
I officially joined Fortius in November 2019.
Sports / Fitness background:
I grew up in the midwest where sports are really popular. You name it, I’ve probably at least tried it! I played competitive softball, track & field, and volleyball. I was also active in swimming, skiing, water skiing, and rock climbing. Since living on the west coast, I’ve become proficient in bodyboarding, and I also raced on two dragon boat teams last year.
Why did you choose Fortius?
I had been doing some CrossFit-style training on my own for two years, but I wanted to get more serious about it. One of my friends said Fortius is the best CrossFit gym in San Diego. I was hooked because of the amazing coaches, the stellar programming, awesome members, and the overall way the gym is managed.
Progress over the last year?
So much! I’ve PR’d all my lifts, and I’m still getting stronger. The biggest personal goals of mine that I’ve met: back squat 1.5x my bodyweight, proficient at double-unders, getting handstand pushups, and getting a bar muscle up! My gymnastics have really improved, thanks to Coach Daimino’s gymnastics classes and programming.
Biggest misconception about CrossFit?
That it’s dangerous. Any sport is dangerous if done recklessly and incorrectly. The coaches at Fortius will help you do it right.
Advice for someone looking to start CrossFit?
If you are interested, don’t think twice. Just pick a gym (hopefully Fortius) and try. And then stick with it if you like it. Don’t be intimidated by what others can do. I put off joining Fortius so many times because I was too intimidated. I thought I didn’t belong because I wasn’t at a certain level. But everything at Fortius is tailored to every level and everyone’s needs. Anyone can do it!
What’s next? Goals for future?
Keep getting stronger and faster with CrossFit! Everytime I meet my goals, I raise the bar higher. Some of my current goals: higher reps of unbroken double-unders, snatch lift at my body weight, a strict handstand pushup, a ring muscle-up, and two or more unbroken bar muscle-ups. I’d also like to experience competition, even if just a local or in-house competition.
