When did you start at Fortius?
February 2018

Sports / fitness background?
My fitness background is somewhat limited. I was a swimmer in high school, but wasn’t very good. After high school, my physical activity of choice was running. I’ve run plenty of 5Ks, a handful of Tough Mudders, and ran my 10th half marathon last March.

Why did you choose Fortius?
Running started to get boring and I wanted to find an activity that would make me stronger. When I first walked through the door at Fortius, I was so nervous that I was literally shaking. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be strong enough and that everyone would wonder why I was there. What I found was the both the members and the coaches were excited for me to start this journey. As I was finishing my first workout (super scaled and dead last), the other athletes were rooting for me. I was blown away by that. I walked through that door totally unsure, but walked out hooked. Fortius has a close knit, inclusive community, and that’s what keeps me coming back.

What kind of progress have you made over the past year?
I feel like I’ve made pretty substantial progress over the last year. With the help of the coaches, I’m finally able to do T2B and a handful of HSPUs which are both very exciting to me. I have enough movements in my toolbox now that I’m able to do some workouts Rx!

What is the biggest misconception about CrossFit?
I think the biggest misconception about CrossFit is that you need to be strong to start and that it’s so intense that you’re guaranteed to get injured.

Advice for someone looking to start CrossFit?
If you’re looking to start CrossFit, the best advice I have is to just start! Don’t overthink it and don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. They’re happy you’re here!

What’s next? What are your goals for the future?
In general, my goal is to keep progressing. The movements that are on my “wish list” are chest to bars, full snatches, and learning to butterfly kip.
