When did you start at Fortius?
July 2020, so just hitting my 1 year anniversary!
Sports / Fitness background?
I grew up swimming competitively. As an adult I love running, hiking, pilates, and yoga. I also used to attend bootcamp classes until last year when many gyms closed down.
Why did you choose Fortius?
I have always been curious about CrossFit and heard great things about Fortius from my boyfriend, Matt, who has been a member for 4 years. My first trial week was humbling but so much fun, so I took the plunge and got a full membership. I really appreciated the excellent coaching, great programing, and focus on proper technique. Plus our 6:15am class crew holds me accountable!
What kind of progress have you made over the past year?
A year ago I was a complete beginner and had never done a clean or a snatch! I’ve learned how to safely and powerfully move with a barbell, and seen huge improvements in my lifts and overall athletic ability. In addition to our WODs, the Olympic Lifting specialty classes have been incredibly beneficial for me. I encourage anyone to make it a point to attend the OLY classes, even if you are just starting CrossFit!
What is the biggest misconception about CrossFit?
That it isn’t safe or that you’re likely to get injured. If you focus on your form, scale when you need to, and listen to your coaches, you’ll stay safe and see incredible results!
Advice for someone looking to start CrossFit?
You don’t need to be a star athlete, just be consistent! Keep showing up, put in the work, and know that everyone has to start somewhere.
What’s next? What are your goals for the future?
I’m excited to refine my Olympic lifting technique and increase my strength. I’ve also been working hard to finally get strict pull ups by the end of this year!
