Name, Age, Occupation?
Zane R., 31, Operations Manager
When did you start at Fortius?
March of 2019
Sports / Fitness background?
Basically none! I was a theater kid in high school and college so I guess there were some dance classes that I was never very good at. Add that to my love of Dungeons and Dragons and reading and I was definitely not getting outside or to a gym very often until I found CrossFit when I was about 28 years old. One class was all it took and I was hooked
Why did you choose Fortius?
I had relocated from New York City to San Diego for work. I had been in and out of gyms trying to find my footing in a new city and looking for a place to call home and my research kept leading me back to Fortius. I came in for the free week trial and was absolutely blown away by the programming, the knowledge of the coaches, and, maybe most of all, the clearly special nature of the community here. So I stayed and have only discovered more to appreciate about Fortius
What kind of progress have you made over the past year?
Even with the unique nature of 2020, this past year has led to the most progress in the gym I have ever experienced. I’ve hit significant PR’s in every lift and am seeing so much progress in the workouts with my strength and conditioning. Maybe even more importantly, with the help of the coaches at Fortius, I have also dialed in my nutrition, made significant gains in my mobility(still really really bad at stretching), and started to really understand and improve my form in lifts. I am in the best shape of my life and I feel fantastic. Turns out making small consistent changes and sticking to them really does yield great results.
What the biggest misconception about CrossFit?
I would say that you need to be at a certain fitness level to start. The workouts are all adaptable to any fitness level. Believe me. The warm-up used to floor me and sometimes they still do. It may never get easier but you will most definitely get better.
Advice for someone looking to start CrossFit?
Start. It won’t hurt to try. Well maybe it’ll hurt a bit the next day but in a good way. Walk in and find your gym. You don’t like that gym, try a different one. Hell, try Fortius.
What’s next? What are your goals for the future?
So many! I really want to get to the point where I can RX all the workouts and all the different movements. I want to get handstands and muscle-ups in the next year. I’d love to enter a competition sooner rather than later as a very proud scaled athlete.
