Growing up I went through an awkward phase as most of us did. I was an overweight, shy kid who was bullied. I started rowing during my sophomore year in high school. I started growing at the same time. I went from that shy, bullied overweight kid, to a taller, fit, confident young adult. Rowing taught me commitment and dedication. It pushed me to the limits of what my body and mind could do. It changed my life for the better and I wouldn't be where I am today without the experiences I've had with it. From training to make the Olympic team to coaching my own teams to National Championships it was a constant source of security in my life. I have many stories when it comes to athleticism in my life. Many of them share a theme, there is a challenge in front of me; it will be a hard one, but I will do my best to overcome it and do the best I can within my abilities.
Injuries. Injuries are always a turning point. 2023 was a year to remember. I have had injuries in the past but nothing to the extreme of rupturing a patellar tendon. Not a small tear; a complete rupture. My fitness is part of what defines me as a person. Being able to move well has always been something I feel is important to a happy life. To say I went through a rough patch was an understatement. I was still working out but only doing what I could do with a bum leg. My job suffered, my life suffered, and I was at a low point. But the key to it all was sticking to a plan. The plan was to rebuild my body. With the rebuilding of my body, my mind followed. I surrounded myself with positive and supportive people and finally made it back to the occasional group workout. I'm still not 100%, but I am still committed to being healthy and fit for daily life. I now do my best to stay committed to the early morning class for myself and if I'm not at the gym I better be on my surfboard. Healthy body, healthy mind. Doing something every day to stimulate my body and mind is far better than nothing.
I love coaching because fitness has always brought me joy. It was the thing that changed my life. I love sharing my experiences and knowledge with clients of all skill levels. Getting fit is fun, Being fit is fun. I've always said if you have a healthy body you can have a healthy mind.
