I discovered CrossFit in 2009 at 17 to prepare for special warfare training while enlisted in the United States Navy. While I did not make it through the training pipeline, I continued to use CrossFit as my main fitness methodology and progressed exponentially as an athlete. After receiving my CF-L1 in 2011, I purchased barbells, bumper plates, kettlebells, slam balls, boxes, etc., and began the "Functional Fitness" club onboard the USS Bonhomme Richard while on deployment. After being honorably discharged I started coaching at CrossFit Invictus where I was surrounded by inspiring members who honed my coaching ability and competitive athletes that humbled me to my core. Over the past decade, I have coached at three different gyms in two states and competed in CrossFit competitions, Olympic weightlifting competitions, and endurance races. I've mountain biked, skied, rock climbed, swam, surfed, and backpacked. I've changed careers too many times to count and have gone through devastating divorce and break-ups. However, one thing has always remained and acted as my true north throughout my life: my commitment to honoring this amazing vessel (the body) I've been blessed with and all the amazing things it can do and withstand.
The turning point in my life came when I met my wife Jessica in 2020. It can be unnerving when you find a partner who believes in you more than you believe in yourself, and this is the situation I found myself in with Jess. At the time I was very comfortable in my career but was coming home each day unfulfilled. One day Jessica asked me "If you could do anything you want in this life what would you do?" When I responded with my answer she then asked "Then why don't you do it?" As cut and dry as this conversation was, It shook my foundation because, for the first time in my life, I couldn't come up with any reasonable excuse not to pursue my passions. I ended up leaving a very secure and well-paying job to return to school to (finally) finish my degree, and also try out for the upcoming San Diego Lifeguard Academy. While that decision to leave my career in the coffee industry has led to its obstacles and hurdles along the way, the amount of personal growth I have experienced from that decision is incalculable. I no longer operate and make decisions based on fear, and I have a deep trust in myself and in knowing that life is buoyant.
My motivation is to pass on the lessons and gifts I have received through learning how to challenge the mind and body. Our world is a reflection of our internal environment, and I truly believe that when the mind and body are strong, resilient, and healthy we flow through life with style and grace, even when challenging situations arise.
